Know Your Risks! Know Your Rights! Online Safety Training

Social workers work in a complex array of settings putting them at risk to be targets for property damage, verbal threats, physical violence or even death in the line of duty. It is the right and responsibility of all social work professionals to continue to develop safety awareness and intervention skills throughout their career. It is the agencies responsibility to support worker safety though policy, training and follow up.

Attendees may use this course to receive 6 safety continuing education credits to meet compliance with KSA 2009 Supp. 65-6313. Kansas State University is a pre-approved continuing education provider approved by the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board. Provider number 15-005.

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Practice awareness of how to protect yourself prior to ever encountering an unsafe situation
  • Apply de-escalation techniques to protect yourself in the moment
  • Exercise reflection to overcome challenges associated with the lasting effects of being involved in an unsafe situation

This course is fully online and self paced. The course is divided into modules that contain training videos (which you can start, pause, stop at anytime), exercises to attempt as part of each training video, and three post-training video assignments. In order to successfully complete this course and receive the CEUs, students must complete the post-training assignments and receive an 80% or higher on an end-of-training quiz.

Cheryl Calhoun is a licensed social worker and licensed addiction counselor with 13 years' experience in addiction counseling and case management. Calhoun serves as instructor in the social work program at Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus. She has been with the campus since 2016. She also serves as the Director of Development and as a substance use disorder counselor at Ashby House in Salina, KS.

System Requirements

The online training software operates on any Mac or PC system. Your system must have speakers with sound enabled. You will need a microphone (webcam optional) to participate in the program. You will need an internet connection, broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE) is recommended.
