Person-Centered Engagement and Behavior Change: A Motivational Interviewing Skill Building Training


Motivational Interviewing is an evidenced-based communication style. This 6-hour training will provide the foundational skills necessary to establish client rapport, client engagement in the treatment process and/or intervention, motivate clients towards behavior change, and briefly explore clients’ ambivalence, support efforts to reduce risk behaviors by acknowledging and enhancing natural capacities and strength base qualities. Motivational Interviewing is communication skills that participants will use immediately with their next clients after the training. This is an educational and fun training environment.

Upon completion of this evidenced-based course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and describe the Motivational Interviewing communication style
  • Understand the spirit of Motivational Interviewing to establish a therapeutic rapport/client engagement
  • Understand and demonstrate basic skills of  OARS: open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summary statements all to elicit change talk

K-State Polytechnic is a pre-approved continuing education provider approved by the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board. Provider number 15-005.

About the Instructor

Bridgette Franklin, MA, PHR, SHRM-CP

Bridgette Franklin is a member of MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers) – International. Bridgette has been conducting motivational interviewing (MI) trainings and consulting with organizations implementing MI into their daily business practices since 2008. She has trained motivational interviewing to a variety of helping professionals and has been a speaker in conferences and associations for Social Workers, Dietitians, Marriage & Family Counseling Services, Mental Health and Kansas Governors Conference. MI is her passion; she trains and mentors new trainers from a variety of helping professions including Social Workers.
