Drone Uses for Agriculture Roadshow
Small unmanned aircraft systems (or more commonly referred to as drones) are continually improving and adding efficiency to many industries. Initially, agriculture was predicted to be the industry impacted the most by drones per the AUVSI study published in 2013, “The Economic Impact of Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration in the United States.” Drones are already proving their return on investment for high-value, small-area crops such as vineyards and orchards. However, broader adoption for large-area agriculture seems lacking. This roadshow seeks to understand the causes of the slow adoption of drones for agriculture and will give an opportunity for producers, crop service providers, and other end-users to voice where a drone can provide value today in the agriculture industry.
Making stops in seven different states, the Drone Uses for Agriculture Roadshow is partnering with various companies, farmers, state agencies, and existing events. Each stop will be a bit different, but will generally follow this schedule:
- On-site registration and hand out training materials (jump drive loaded with example data sets and a workbook)
- Free lunch for participants
- Discussion about current & future uses of drones for agriculture
- Demonstrate the large-area mapping capability of the SenseFly eBee X
- Demonstrate the subsampling & real-time mapping capabilities of the Parrot Bluegrass Fields
- Survey for participants to voice their perspective on the use of drones for agriculture
This roadshow is funded by the National Science Foundation’s Midwest Big Data Hub: Digital Agriculture Spoke.
