Working with Loss and Grief

Working with people will bring you into contact with those experiencing loss and grief at many levels. This three-hour workshop is designed to explore the types of losses that may trigger a grief reaction and help you become more aware of the needs of people experiencing loss.  The workshop will also explore the impact of loss on the professional and identify strategies for working through losses. 

Attendees may use this course to meet compliance 3 continuing education credits. K-State Polytechnic is a pre-approved continuing education provider approved by the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board. Provider number 15-005.

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify a broad range of losses that trigger grief
  • Describe common myths about grieving
  • Identify common grief reactions
  • Discuss central needs of mourning
  • Recognize unresolved issues
  • Utilize ideas generated for creating meaning

A discounted registration rate is offered to current graduate and post doctoral students. About the Instructor

Debra Marseline
Kansas State University


Deb Marseline, LMSW is a graduate of Bethany College and Washburn University. She spent six years in child welfare as a crisis counselor, social worker, and Director of Staff Training for United Methodist Youthville. She taught for 10 years as an adjunct instructor at Bethany College for the Social Work, Psychology and Criminal Justice departments. She has been a part-time instructor for three years and is currently the Practicum Coordinator for the Kansas State University Social Work Program in Salina. She continues as a PRN Social Worker doing bereavement work for Ottawa County Hospice and is Treasurer for Smoky Hill Association of Social Workers.
